I wanted to write a blog post about what I think is worth investing in when I realized that most of what I know about fashion and how to identify something that is forever, rather than a temporary trend, is mostly due to my grandmother.
My grandmother to me is a style icon. She is known as the leopard queen and is rarely seen without at least something, a scarf or shoe, in leopard print. Leopard has it's big moments and can be underrated for a few seasons, but always has a way of making a comeback on the runway. However, long before leopard made it's most recent comeback, leopard print was something I knew as a staple in any fashion-forward woman's wardrobe. I would definitely invest in a leopard printed item because I know I will have it forever. Since leopard is a trendy print, you have to be able to pick and choose which leopard prints look high-end and classic rather than tacky. Think of leopard as a neutral.
Leopard
Since leopard is a print, by invest I don't necessarily mean splurge. You can find amazing leopard print items for all different amounts. However, if you see something leopard that you love, get it.
Golden Goose sneakers
This one I am really shocked about because for the longest time I could not get myself to justify spending that much on sneakers. That being said, each pair of GG sneakers is like a work of art. They are all slightly differently made, all such different and fun designs, they really are so well-made and special. If you own a pair, you’ll likely agree with me that when you are wearing a pair of Golden Goose sneakers you feel like the coolest human on earth. You can be wearing sweatpants or workout clothes and automatically become fashion forward after slipping on a pair. In my opinion, the more sparkles, the better! The sizing is tricky… I feel that the high-top styles run true-to-size and the regular low rise sneakers, you should size up in. For instance in my pink high tops I bought a 38 and in my black and silver ones I bought a 39 (I’m a US size 8). If you are between sizes, size up. The main reason I think these are worth the splurge is because a fun pair of shoes never go out of style.
On the topic of shoes, another shoe worth the investment is Manolo Blahnik
If you are anything like me and anything sparkly makes you so happy, or if you’ve ever seen an episode of Sex in the City, then I am sure you are familiar with these spectacular shoes. Manolo Blahnik, the designer, favored elegant and ultra-feminine styles, which is how he came to create his designs after learning the craftmanship from his mother. When he started to make a name for himself during the early 1970s, where platforms and clunky heels ruled the footwear trends, Blahnik wasn’t into the wedge-like designs because he didn’t see them as feminine. He then decided to turn his focus onto making stilettos, allowing his shoes to stand out from the rest. Stilettos have become Blahnik’s permanent design ever since. One of my earliest memories of helping my grandmother get ready for an event, I walked into her closet and saw a pair of heels with a HUGE diamond square on the toe, a pair of Manolo’s. Something that special and noteworthy is worth investing in, I would even consider these shoes a collector’s item and something that can be handed down generations…please!!
Designer bags
We have seen a recent recycling of handbags, the Dior saddle bag, the small Fendi bag, even fanny packs have made a comeback. Mini bags are very hot right now, but they always have a way of staying relevant. My mom saved two designer backpacks that she got before she was married and now are being worn by Kendall Jenner and by every influencer on Instagram, thanks mom! Who doesn’t want a cute designer bag for a night out with the girls? Even if you fall in love with a trendier style purse that you know is not the most classic, like I said- everyone wants a cute designer purse- you will be able to sell, hand-down, or put it away for when that style resurfaces. Bags are worth the investment.
I could probably go on, but this is my short list of things that to me are worth the investment because they have proven to be timeless.
